Hurricane Katrina Quilts

Hurricane Katrina hit our nation hard and left a lot of people scrambling for their lives with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Quilters nationwide rallied with unbelievable speed to help cover those stranded with a little bit of warmth and love. The quilters in Marion united to be part of this wonderful effort. Here are some pictures of one of the nights we worked. Unfortunately, I didn't have the camera on the first workday, but others were involved as well. A big hats off to you ladies!!

Making a quilt to donate to Quilt Pink to be auctioned off:

On Sept. 20, 2006, ladies gathered to make some "funky" Hugs and Kisses blocks as well as some 4 patch blocks. Names were gathered for our center vase full of flowers done in memory/honor of those who had breast cancer. IT was a successful PINK Day!

I finished making some extra blocks. I quilted it with a pink variagated thread and put words of encouragement throughout the quilt, such as hope, hugs, kisses, strength, courage, etc. It was bound, a label added and away it went to Quilt Pink, ready for auction on ebay.

Thanks to all the wonderful ladies who gave up a Saturday to help make this quilt for a great cause!

UPDATE: Sept. 20, 2007--we did get a bid on our quilt and it sold for $150. A good thing is that Quilt Pink received over 4000 quilts to be auctioned off! The unfortunate thing is that there were so many and they have been up for auction, in batches of 100 at a time, that the market is getting somewhat diluted and quite a few are not selling or just getting the minimum bids. Quilters are just too generous! :)

This year,  on Sept. 29, 2007 from 1-5 PM, we will participate, of sorts, on Quilt Pink Day by gathering together to make blocks and giving it to a local quilter who is suffering from breast cancer.
